Stressful Life Events and Severity of Depression

Abstract
The influence of stressful life events arising in different life stages on the severity of depression was examined in a sample of 74 depressive women, ranging from 20 to 65 years of age.
In an interview, information was obtained on the incidence of stressful life events in 4 clearly defined periods of life stage and the Moony Problem Checklist was used as the inventory for assessing previous and recent life events.
The severity of depression was measured using the Beck Depressin Inventory. In the year prior to interview, the incidence of stressful life events was most high and the difficulties with other persons, social relationships, residence, work and unfolding were significantly associated with higher BDI scores and most of the significant predictors of severity of depression dated from this period.
Multiple regression analysis was conducted for each period, to determine which of the variables within a specific period had the greatest impact on the severity of depression. These variables were as follow : difficulties with residence, self-esteem in the third period and difficulties with residence, social relationships and problems with sexuality in the last period.
In summary, difficulties experienced in childhood, adolescence and 19years to 1 year before interview were found to be crucial factors for indirectly predicting the severity of depression. Difficulties experienced for one year prior to assessment appeared to directly predict the severity of depression and the origin of those could be traced back to the early periods.
